Job Description:
This position is for one post-secondary aged student to assist outreach workers and lead Lakefield Youth Unlimited’s (LYU) summer programming offered to the local youth and the summer population of youth within the village of Lakefield from May – August 2026. The goal of this program is to continue building relationships with the youth and their families during the summer months in order to create a safe environment and activities to keep the youth occupied.
The person filling this role is a representative of Lakefield Youth Unlimited/Kawartha Youth for Christ and will therefore demonstrate appropriate behaviour, attitude and confidentiality befitting the organization (as to the Kawartha Youth For Christ Community Commitments and Statement of Faith).
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Schedule is mainly weekdays but will need to be available for some weekends in July and August
- Work alongside supervisor (LYU Outreach Workers) and other LYU staff to develop programming, meetings and special events
- Assist supervisor in physically preparing for programs/events (purchasing supplies, location set-up) and attend and co-lead programs/events
- Attend and support Jr. High Gym Night, Lakefield District Public School Funfair, Reading Program, local school support, and other projects until late June. (This time period allows the Summer Program Student to be introduced to youth before the summer break and time to be trained for summer programming.)
- Attend and support weekly Drop-in, campfires and Hope Valley Day Camp, and Bible studies during the months of July and August – Programming is subject to change based on the applicant’s skillset and passions
- Attend & support any service trips and field trips outside of Lakefield
- Keep accurate records (registration forms, incident reports, attendance numbers)
- Seek to develop relationships with disadvantaged youth to promote prosocial behaviours
- Partner with local community groups for special weekend and weekday events (Kids’ Tent at Farmers’ Market, Jazz & Art Festival, Lakefield Street Sale)
- Provide consistent, fair guidance and conflict resolution as the need arises
- Develop personal ethics and the ability to deal with social justice issues
- Attend staff training days, which help develop the ability to identify, assess and solve problems
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Attend weekly supervision and mentoring meetings for oversight and feedback of students’ performance
- Take photos of summer events for social media
Dates for Community Events with Kids Tent:
- Lakefield Farmers’ Market - Thursday’s for the month of June
- Lakefield Jazz & Art Festival - Saturday, July 11th
- Lakefield Street Sale - Saturday in Early August
Qualifications
- Must provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check
- Able to agree and sign Kawartha Youth For Christ’s Statement of Faith and Community Commitments
- Experience working with youth an asset
- First Aid certification an asset
- Food handlers certificate an asset
- Lifeguard certification an asset
Compensation
$20.00 per hour
